GEOTHERMAL GENERATION PLANT

Location: Oil production facilities, geothermal reservoirs
Approx. value: US$500 per installed kw
Client: Oil & Gas Sector, Utilities, Industrials
Category: Energy efficiency -> Heat recovery

Geothermal energy is energy obtained by harnessing the heat from the Earth's interior. With the use of Rankine cycle thermoelectric plants, replacing boilers with geothermal fluids, it is viable to generate electricity. The plants can also be used as a form of heat recovery in industrial processes, such as oil extraction, since in the Colombian case, when extracting oil, a lot of water is also extracted, which generally comes with a high temperature.
This form of renewable energy is widely under-utilized or completely disregarded.

Our Solutions

The proposal consists of the use of geothermal energy, currently available in all crude oil extraction fields, to use the heat brought by the process water to generate electrical energy.

The proposal consists of taking advantage of geothermal energy, currently available in all crude oil extraction fields, to use the heat brought by the process water to generate electrical energy using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) plants that instead of Water uses an organic compound (refrigerant) as a driving fluid, because it changes from the liquid state to the gaseous state at low temperatures.
The generation potential depends on the amount of fluid and its temperature, but there are geothermal generation plants larger than 100 MW with very low installation and operation costs.
